In the Chair - Real People Real Hair - Rosie

This was a long-delayed press makeover that we were hoping to fit in earlier, but Lockdown rules held us back. We finally agreed with The Daily Mail to add Rosie Millard to our first morning, Super Saturday, not realising they would erect a portable studio in the main salon for a photographer, his assistant and make-up artist. Fortunately, our Planogramming had created so much distancing space in the salon it all came together with only mild stress first thing.

There are fewer short hairstyles seen these days but a lot of demand. The haircut icons of earlier days seem very distant - Mia Farrow, Audrey Hepburn, Purdy, Princess Diana, Meg Ryan. What started in the 90s as a journey along the fashion-wave for longer hair, became a trap, as the doors of competence slammed shut behind it. No one bothered learning how to layer any more (my salon team excluded). The truth is, most hairdressers would rather reach for some clip-on extensions or a set of flat irons, so they just cut one-length Bobs, and rely heavily on tongs to style.

But there is a desire from many clients to refresh their look with shorter hair. Here’s a good example.

This is what we did…

1. Cut - The haircut had very common errors. The crown area was still way too short even after 4 months growth. Hairdressers think this is the answer to get height, but without proper supporting layers underneath the hair goes even flatter at the critical temple area and separates like a pineapple top above. What’s wanted is a lift, up from the eyes in the 10 -11 o’clock region not the 12 o’clock top.

Using our signature Diamond Dry Cut™ I actually cut nothing around the crown but took length away all through the front and middle area to balance the length at the bottom which we wanted to keep. Read… What’s the Diamond Dry Cut™

2. Condition - The original hair was parched and flat. Dehydrated further from supermarket box tints which, along with the uneven haircut, made it all look frizzier. When hair becomes this dry and decayed its more difficult to manage and colour fades quickly. We gave Rosie the LifeSaver Prewash Treatment. Nothing injects moisture, elasticity and shine quite like this.

3. Colour – When I look at someone’s colour that just isn’t right, it’s like fingernails on a blackboard to me. We cut a lot of the faded ends so the colour instantly had more depth and contrast. Then Jodie, our Colour Director, set to work restoring tone and contrast, so the colour was not only supremely flattering but also, believably part of Rosie, not something sitting atop her head.

4. Styling - This haircut can be worn lots of different ways; dried smooth and under for a groomed look, or just finger dried with a very light styling touch all around the hairline. This is what we did today, just drying with fingers and smoothing only the hairline sections with a medium round bristle brush. This takes just a few minutes but gives a softer, still natural looking finish.

“What a day. The almost forgotten sensation of having my hair cut (MVC always cuts dry) coloured, washed and styled was so lovely. And being pampered after months of DIY beauty, made me feel a million dollars, full of energy, and years younger. - Rosie

For Rosie’s hair we used our hero product - LifeSaver Prewash Treatment to rehydrate, then Cashmere Protein UV Protective Shampoo and Conditioner. A little Thicker Quicker and Volumising Mousse, helped give texture and lift to the soft hair for groomed styling. We used the Medium Round Brush to smooth just the hairline, the rest finger-dried naturally. Then finally a little Ten Second Transformation to give shine, texture and hold.

I love long hair. But sometimes you can have too much of a good thing, and if it’s not cut properly it can drown the wearer and make shampoo-days a dreaded event. Tara had gorgeous hair but the haircut had no shape. Just the usual...

I don’t normally start by showing the back. But the breakage and damage was so bad that the entire top portion at the back had snapped off. Kazz had been paying a lot for hair colouring and for regular Olaplex treatments over the years. Yet her extremely damaged hair quality was something I regularly see. Unnecessarily weak thin broken hair, and dull colour.

How many Bobs have you got?

These quick clunky haircuts are becoming prolific as hairdressers become less and less able to layer hair properly. Emily had the very common 3-step Bob. The baseline, a step four inches off the bottom, and a sort of torn irregular piece suggestive of a long
