Wavy hair can often be frizzy too. Unfortunately, it’s made much worse by poor haircutting, and by many of the hair products that tame frizz for today, but create more frizz tomorrow. (Silicone-rich anti-frizz products in particular)

If you’re resigned to thinking you’ve got bad hair, help is at hand. We have the techniques and the products to care for wavy or curly hair and banish frizz. But first the cut.

What makes a great haircut?

The cut is the most important part of your hairstyle and should do most of the work. Badly cut hair will quietly drain your confidence, and dry or wavy hair will look much frizzier, as with Jess’s hair before we went to work.

Jess’s haircut was typical of the corrective work I do for new clients. It had a steep A-Line outline with no layers at the back, but a chunk taken out below the chin that left the front tips dangling long, wispy and frizzy. Correcting Jess’s meant removing excess length at the front and layering the lower layers properly at the back.

Colour Correction

Diana, our talented colourist added lighter pieces through the lengths to create lift, depth and contrast especially around the face. Then used a warm toner on the ends that had become flat and pale.

After the haircut and colour we took the effortless styling route, which was to apply our amazing LifeSaver UV, comb through and leave to dry naturally. Once dry, we applied a tiny amount of Ten Second Transformation for definition, protection and shine.

Jess was surprised at how easily LifeSaver UV transformed her hair frizzy hair into soft waves when she wanted to leave it to dry naturally.

Then we showed Jess a smoother look. We blow dried with a large round brush and used large round tongs to give soft waves.

“I’m totally in love with my new hair! Michael and his team completely transformed my flat, shapeless cut into one with more movement, body and bounce, and Diana picked the perfect warm, golden tones to lift my hair and complexion. The Lifesaver UV has also become an absolute essential in my daily routine - finally no more frizz! Thank you to everyone in the  Michael Van Clarke team for making me feel proud of my hair.”- Jess

For Jess’s hair we prepared with a LifeSaver Prewash Treatment to rehydrate, then UV Protective Shampoo and Conditioner after the colour.

To natural style, we used LifeSaver UV Leave-in Styling Treatment and once it had dried, a little Ten Second Transformation to feed and smooth the hair giving a little shine and texture too.

To smooth style, we used a little Thicker Quicker Volumising Spray on the roots and Volumising Mousse on the mid length and ends. Then we blow dried smoother with our Large Round Bristle Brush and spritzed a little Holding Spray at the end to give texture and hold.

I love long hair. But sometimes you can have too much of a good thing, and if it’s not cut properly it can drown the wearer and make shampoo-days a dreaded event. Tara had gorgeous hair but the haircut had no shape. Just the usual...

I don’t normally start by showing the back. But the breakage and damage was so bad that the entire top portion at the back had snapped off. Kazz had been paying a lot for hair colouring and for regular Olaplex treatments over the years. Yet her extremely damaged hair quality was something I regularly see. Unnecessarily weak thin broken hair, and dull colour.

How many Bobs have you got?

These quick clunky haircuts are becoming prolific as hairdressers become less and less able to layer hair properly. Emily had the very common 3-step Bob. The baseline, a step four inches off the bottom, and a sort of torn irregular piece suggestive of a long
