In the Chair - Real People Real Hair - Amy

Cut, Condition and Colour. Why these 3 steps all count in getting curl and movement.

Amy wanted to wear her hair fuller sometimes, more vamped up. She found it difficult to put bend into the hair, and if she managed, it wouldn’t last.

This is what we did...

1. Cut - The haircut lacked versatility so needed adjusting. Her A-Line one-length outline could just about work if it was always kept perfectly straight. But’s that’s unrealistic and the first kink would throw the style. It’s also harder to curl one-length hair. Much better to have a haircut that works for straight or wavy. Then if a straight blowdry starts to wear off it still looks great. Or if you want to wear it natural that’s good too. It makes wavy styles much easier to achieve. And they last longer. We graduated the ‘too long’ hair at the front and connected long layers through to the back.

2. Condition - The original haircut had long dry ends at the front and excess colour damage. When hair becomes this dry and decayed its reluctant to bend. And even if you can force a wave in with hot tongs it doesn’t last. We gave Amy our SOS Treatment. This combines our Exfoliating Scalp Treatment with LifeSaver Prewash Treatment in the hair. Nothing infuses moisture, strength elasticity and shine quite like this. Read…The Facts of LifeSaver

3. Colour – The combination of the new haircut and the LifeSaver Treatment has brought vibrancy and texture back into the existing colour. The colour now reveals its depth and contrast of virgin hair and highlighted strands. The effect also helps to create movement.

What makes a great haircut?

Before – The haircut started square with no layering and then jumped to some layering a few inches above the hairline which petered out suddenly. There was also a gap in the outline between the back and sides. This lack of fluidity in the haircut shape stunted movement in the hair. The flatness of the haircut also created a flatness in the colour.

After – The new haircut has kept the length at the back but corrected the outline and blended the layers in more precisely. This also helps the hair move well as seen in the video below. It means that when hair moves around it will pull itself as one and land as one, like a flock of birds or shoal of fish, rather than the front separating from the back or sides and all hanging lifeless on their own. Amy can repeat the simple blowdry herself at home. Smooth, shiny and full of vitality.

The Diamond Dry Cut™ is my natural method of sculpting. We cut hair dry to see the shape evolve in much the same way as an artist approaches a marble bust.

Hair is a sensual material. It exudes vibrancy and a sexual energy that is all part of our animal attraction. But it has to be able to move or at least suggest the promise of this latent energy.

Bounce, swing, vitality, vibrancy, strength, suppleness, flexibility, spring, elasticity, lustre, resonance. These are the words we associate with youthful, healthy, sexy hair and particularly longer hair that can swing far and wide. But the two key things that will mostly kill this energy are a long A-Line outline shape and poor condition. My scissors dealt with the haircut. Our LifeSaver Treatment helped repair condition. See how Amy’s hair resonates with energy and vitality when she moves. I’ve slowed the film down so you can see the detail. Watch the video…

For Amy’s hair we used Exfoliating Scalp Treatment to cleanse and purify the scalp, and our hero product LifeSaver Prewash Treatment to rehydrate and repair. Even after just one application it injected strength and moisture into the hair which is the critical element in hair having spring, elasticity and bounce. It gets even better with continual use.

We washed with Cashmere Protein Exfoliating Scalp Shampoo and protected with Cashmere Protein UV Protective Conditioner. A little Volumising Mousse helped give body and control. We used the Large Round Brush Soft Bristle to style. Then finally a little Ten Second Transformation to feed and smooth the hair giving a little shine and texture too. Amy uses a No.1 brush to stay groomed during the day.

I love long hair. But sometimes you can have too much of a good thing, and if it’s not cut properly it can drown the wearer and make shampoo-days a dreaded event. Tara had gorgeous hair but the haircut had no shape. Just the usual...

I don’t normally start by showing the back. But the breakage and damage was so bad that the entire top portion at the back had snapped off. Kazz had been paying a lot for hair colouring and for regular Olaplex treatments over the years. Yet her extremely damaged hair quality was something I regularly see. Unnecessarily weak thin broken hair, and dull colour.

How many Bobs have you got?

These quick clunky haircuts are becoming prolific as hairdressers become less and less able to layer hair properly. Emily had the very common 3-step Bob. The baseline, a step four inches off the bottom, and a sort of torn irregular piece suggestive of a long
